Chapter 1: Humble Beginnings

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced in the yesteryears of 2012. According to Edge Magazine’s Jen Simpson, Cyberpunk 2077 is based on a roleplaying tabletop game by Mike Pondsmith.[1] Pondsmith was a consultant on the project to lend his expertise. Engadget columnist Jessica Conditt writes that the game draws strong influence from other notable series like the Japanese animation Ghost in the Shell, Deux Ex, and Blade Runner. And she states that “The role system comes straight from the pen-and-paper Cyberpunk.”[2] Not bad shows to pull influence from if you ask me, although I…well…I might get cancelled for this, but never caught the hype-train for Blade Runner. It was a cool movie I guess. . .anyway, moving on.

According to Robert Purchese from Eurogamer, as soon as CD Projekt Red finished production on famed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, they with only 50 staff members on available dove right into pre-production of Cyberpunk 2077.[3] Don’t worry, the staff was later expanded upon the team size eventually eclipsed that of The Witcher 3. However, how long into pre-production before that occurred and to what stage of framework were they on that could have impacted them later is not revealed in this article. The game was meticulously planned with groups focused on only one area of expertise, an entirely new studio opening up and big names like NVIDIA for ray-tracing and QLOC for quality assurance.[4][5][6] Optimization was at the heart of the mission as claimed by this studio, yet, for all intents and purposes we know that wasn’t the reality. No, not even close. . .

Chapter 2: Insanity Begins

Delays, delays, delays. That was the plague-train of being an obedient fan salivating at the lips waiting to take a bite into this game as every planned release got pushed back by the developers, claiming it just isn’t done yet, but hold on, its coming soon and will be worth it, we promise. CD Projekt Red proclaimed that they won’t release an unfinished game and that you wouldn’t enjoy it either, so it will be ready when its ready. Come November of 2020, it looked like this was it, finally, no more delays, the game will officially launch on December 10th, of 2020! Five days, four days, three days, no last-minute announcement delays, two days! Almost there! One day! Its tonight! And then, the unthinkable. [show scenes of glitchy gameplay, people having stood in line for hours] WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?!

Cyberpunk 2077 was a mess. [Donald Trump calling Jeb Bush a mess, a waste]. Naked player models. T-Posing. Copyright sound music not being playable. Crazy driving mechanics. And more insane bugs! Why have the development Gods forsaken us and only left us with a dong creator. . .

Clarity arrives! Reviews from critics start pouring in. Playstaion 4 and Xbox One reviews are very mixed.[7][8] Turns out reviews by critics like Kallie Plagge were based on the PC version![9] And you needed a supped up computer at that to run it like they experienced. But wait! There’s more! PC Gamer reported that Eurogamer reported that CD Projekt Red let the cat out of the bag via tweet that:

“First of all, we would like to start by apologizing for not showing the game on base last-gen consoles before it premiered and, in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase. We should have paid more attention to making it play better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One."[10]

How underhanded! The New York Times and The Guardian even wrote pieces on it dogging on it and the horrendous misfire that this game became after almost ten years of suspense and build-up. The game was optimized for the newest consoles we learned. Something many (myself included) have struggled to get hold of without paying eye-gouging prices by scalpers. With all the slamming and slandering and hilarious glitch videos equaling a huge swath of inescapable bad press, the company had no choice but to begin offering refunds. Sony Playstation even stepped in to offer refunds for a while as written by Jonathan Dombush![11] With many patch updates being launched since release that stabilizes a lot of bugs it seems it is being stitched to a playable state, but for many of us, we took our dong in hand and left. . .

Chapter 3: 2077 Years Later

Looking to the future, Cyberpunk 2077 is no No Man’s Sky and shouldn’t be confused for that – and that game basically finally has everything it promised it would have now. Here’s the difference. Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t fabricate what it was like No Man’s Sky. It was what it set out to be from the getgo, but it was just usurped by not enough testing and quality control on the majority system that most people myself included purchased the game for. No Man’s Sky made huge promises and delivered on basically none on day one. So let’s not equate them. This is Apples to Oranges. Even so, there was a class-action lawsuit filed against the publisher in California on December 24th, 2020 as reported by Nicole Carpenter by the investors.[12] And as mentioned earlier, they are bleeding money from numerous refunds and their reputation took a hammering![13] So the future for the development team and game will have a few rough bumps, but is not impossible to recover from and retain players, albeit smaller than anticipated and projected. Let’s bring it in for the conclusion.

In conclusion, the Dark Truth and underlying theme here was game politics at its finest. The developers knowingly misled consumers and even reviewers with the final product they were actually getting. To what extent they knew these bugs would occur en-masse to the general public who are mostly playing on consoles they didn’t do enough quality assurance testing on, no body knows. Maybe, they were strapped from deadlines and couldn’t get any extensions further knowing the blowback from consumers and maybe even CD Projekt Red’s bosses would be too severe, so they sent the game out on a wing and a prayer hoping for the best. And that is where I am inclined to believe they were more closely at strategic thinking wise. They obviously didn’t plan for it being this bad but thought they could squeak by with a few mishaps and patch it and the blowback of a delay was far more disasterous. So, was there malicious intent here? No, I do not think so, I don’t think there was, I just think there was incompetence from senior staff and maybe even drinking too much of their own do-no-wrong Kool-Aid. What do you guys think? Do you guys think they did this on purpose? Love to read it in a comment down below! I read and respond to most if not all comments! Don’t forget to subscribe and ring that notification bell to never miss more Expose. Its free.
